FONAS and St Vincent’s Hospital are proud to present an

exhibition of drawings by National Art School students Hannah

Paine, Harrie Fasher, Ben Milne and Robert Shepherd.

This combined body of work is the result of a week's visit to

Sydney’s historical Cockatoo Island and reflects four unique

views of an inspiring city landmark. These and other drawings

by the four artists mark this exhibition a worthwhile visit to

the Xavier Art Space at the St Vincent’s Hospital.

Exhibition Dates: 24 August – 17 September 2009

On an Island: Selections from National Art School Drawing Week

In association with the Sydney Harbour Federation Trust and Cockatoo Island, the National Art School presents an exhibition of student works produced during its annual Drawing Week.

The National Art School philosophy and method is based on the idea that to draw is to engage with the act of seeing, of interpreting and transcribing the objective and subjective worlds. The activity is viewed as fundamental to all facets of artistic practice. It is this core belief, combined with a practice-oriented approach to teaching and learning, that led to Drawing Week which launches the school year.

Drawing Week arose out of staff discussions about the New York Studio School’s intensive week-long ‘Drawing Marathon’, and has utilised sites such as Walsh Bay, Victoria Barracks and Middle Head over the past eleven years. The aim is to use aspects of the city and harbour as research material for drawing subjects, allowing students to hone skills and develop ideas via engagement with a distinctive environment.

Guided by the experienced artists and teachers who make up the staff of the school, NAS students have spent an intensive four days on Cockatoo Island each year for the past three years - cross-legged in the shade of a towering crane, painstakingly recording the minute details of a sandstone wall or gazing out over Sydney Harbour. On an island presents the creative and inventive approaches to drawing taken by second and third year NAS students in 2009. Their work includes pen and ink on paper, watercolours, sketchbooks and visual diaries, animation, installation and a ‘sound drawing’, as well as other media that are embraced by the broad definition of drawing.

Cockatoo Island is a heritage site and landmark, which has recently become a venue for regular art exhibitions and installations. A former industrial school, reformatory, shipyard and gaol, the island retains workshops, wharves and other buildings as remnants of the island’s convict and maritime industrial past. The island offers harbour views, natural landscape, architecture and machinery to inspire NAS students -and it shares a historical link with the National Art School site, which was also a convict prison in a former incarnation.

This exhibition of student work coincides with an installation on the island by Ken Unsworth – A RingingGlass (Rilke). Unsworth’s work typically deals with the past, with nostalgia, loss, history, memory and the passage of time. A National Art School alumnus, his work also features in A Field Guide: From Antlers toIsland which is showing at the National Art School Gallery from 7 May to 13 June.

Spanning the decades of the 1930s to the 1970s, A Field Guide features rarely seen drawings and props from the National Art School’s unique collection. Incorporating fantastic diagrams for creating puppets and other teaching guides by Frank Hinder, life-model drawings by NAS students such as James Gleeson and Ken Unsworth and studies of mythological themes and still-lifes, amongst many other subjects, this presentation peers into the often mysterious world of the drawing studio.

The National Art School collection includes art acquired by gift and by purchase, works that arrived unheralded, work by teachers who are often major Australian artists, and student work, that is relatively ‘untested’ before those students join the wider artistic community. A Field Guide allows visitors to enjoy the experience of seeing art in its earliest incarnation - within the art school context - and to recognise the importance of art schools as repositories of significant and vital cultural material.

In the last week of February, 200 students spent 4 days drawing on Cockatoo Island.

Students selected one of the projects designed by
Drawing staff to support exploration of observational,
installation and other forms of drawing.

On the last day, drawings were shown where they
were made, for general viewing and group crits.

ART& ABOUT - LIFE DRAWING IN THE CITY

As part of the City of Sydney's Art & About Festival, the National Art School offered free life drawing classes in Sydney's public spaces. The classes took place at lunchtime in Taylor Square and at the AMP Building Forecourt, Alfred Street. Students and members of the public participated.

The exhibition features a collection of drawings taking inspiration from the site of Drawing Week, Cockatoo Island - a site of the industrial sublime, now left in silent animation as a museum to the Island's shipbuilding history. The four exhibiting artists will also be showing other drawing works.

FONAS provides invaluable support to the students, staff and graduates of the National Art School, promotes the continuation of the unique model of art education taught at the School, while also involving the broader community in the educational, historical and cultural pursuits of this important sector of the visual arts.

For Drawing Week 2008 (courtesy of the Harbour Trust) two hundred 2nd and 3rd year students (and 10 staff each day), had access to the buildings and grounds of historic Cockatoo Island, a working shipyard on Sydney Harbour as recently as 1992 but with a history that goes back to use by convict labourers and more distantly to aboriginal fishing grounds pre European settlement.

A selection of drawings from Cockatoo Island was exhibited in the NAS Project Space, concluding and celebrating the week's experience. Congratulations to all the students for an exciting and productive week.

CURRENT FEATURE: Visiting Artist, Melody Willis

The National Art School operates an annual visiting artist program. Artists are invited to work within the school for one year, occupying a studio and providing a point of contact between art students and practicing artists.

The visiting artist connected to the Drawing Department in 2008 is Melody Willis. Her work reconfigures elements of incidental architecture, noting the ways people alter and engage with public space. Photographs and on-site drawings are used as source material for larger constructed drawings and paintings.

Melody is also undertaking an Asialink arts residency in China, funded by The Australia Council and connected to Platform China Contemporary Art Institute in the Caochangdi arts village, Beijing. She will be pursuing a drawing project in response to the rapid pace of urban transformation in Beijing. On her return to the National Art School in July, she will expand on this experience, creating a large body of works on paper in the studio.
